Cutting salt via processed foods suggested

DORTMUND, Germany, July 20 (UPI) -- Using less salt on food, or avoiding processed food, which is high in sodium, can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, researchers in Germany say.

Dieter Klaus and colleagues say people whose dietary intake of sodium chloride is in excess of 6 grams per day, run an increases risk of cardiovascular morbidities and hypertension.

In Western industrialized nations, one in two deaths is due to a cardiovascular disorder and the average intake of sodium chloride is in the range of 8 grams to 12 grams a day. Salt restriction may help prevent cardiovascular morbidities and may also counteract other lifestyle diseases such as obesity and diabetes, Klaus said.

Klaus and colleagues suggest reducing dietary salt intake population-wide. If the sodium chloride levels of processed foods were lowered by 40 percent to 50 percent, people's daily salt intake would be lowered to 5 to 6 grams per day.

The findings are published in the journal Deutsches Arzteblatt International.
